What Is Care-First Auto Insurance?
Care-First is Alberta's new auto insurance model, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
The new system is designed to focus on medical care, rehabilitation and recovery rather than relying primarily on lawsuits to resolve injury claims.
Under Care-First, eligible benefits will be available regardless of who caused the collision. Medical and rehabilitation benefits will have no overall dollar or time limit for eligible expenses, provided the applicable program requirements are met.
The system also introduces changes to income replacement, permanent impairment benefits, claims administration and treatment processes.
When Does Care-First Apply to Your Accident?
The date of your accident is important.
Accidents before January 1, 2027
Claims arising from accidents before the transition date generally follow the existing insurance framework applicable to those claims.
Under the current system, treatment may be provided through Alberta's Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation (DTPR) or other applicable accident-benefit arrangements.
Patients should continue following their insurer's existing instructions, treatment requirements and documentation deadlines.
Accidents on or after January 1, 2027
Care-First is scheduled to apply to accidents occurring on or after this date.
New claims will follow the applicable Care-First process, including its treatment pathways, forms, documentation and benefit requirements.
Already receiving MVA treatment? Do not assume your claim automatically changes when the new system begins. Contact your insurer or claims representative to confirm which rules apply to your specific accident.
How Will MVA Treatment Change?
Under the current system
Eligible common injuries may be treated under predefined diagnostic and treatment protocols. Visit limits depend on the applicable injury classification and protocol requirements.
Additional or extended treatment may require further documentation, an insurer review or another applicable treatment pathway.
Under Care-First
Care-First introduces a structured Program of Care for eligible injuries, using evidence-based treatment and a focus on recovery.
Treatment will be guided by the patient's condition, progress and the applicable program requirements. Further or customized treatment may be considered when the relevant criteria are met.
Although the overall medical and rehabilitation benefits will no longer have the current system's general dollar and time caps, this does not mean that every treatment, service or appointment is automatically covered.
Insurer requirements, clinical documentation and the applicable treatment guidelines will still matter.

What Should You Do After a Car Accident?
If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, consider these steps:
- Seek an appropriate medical assessment. Have your injuries assessed, particularly if you have new or worsening symptoms.
- Keep your accident and insurance information. Record the accident date, insurer, claim number and any relevant reports or correspondence.
- Follow your insurer's current instructions. Make sure you understand the applicable claim process, treatment requirements and paperwork.
- Ask questions before arranging additional treatment. Confirm whether the proposed service follows your applicable treatment pathway and whether further approval or documentation is required.
- Stay informed about Care-First. If your accident occurs on or after January 1, 2027, confirm the new claim process with your insurer and healthcare provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Care-First mean all my treatments will be free?
Not necessarily. Care-First expands medical and rehabilitation benefits, but coverage depends on eligibility, the applicable treatment pathway and other program requirements. Ask your insurer about your specific claim before assuming that a service or expense will be paid.
Will I still need insurance forms?
Yes, documentation will remain part of the claims process. The applicable forms and requirements will depend on the insurance system governing your accident. Care-First forms are intended for use from January 1, 2027, not before the system takes effect.
Does it matter who caused the accident?
Under Care-First, eligible medical, rehabilitation and other benefits are designed to be available regardless of fault. Fault can still have consequences under the insurance system, and specific legal rules and exceptions apply.
Can I continue treatment if my recovery takes longer?
Care-First removes the current system's general overall dollar and time limits for eligible medical and rehabilitation expenses. Continued treatment must still satisfy the applicable clinical and program requirements; it is not an automatic entitlement to unlimited appointments of any kind.
